23.06.2014Roma volunteers are helping people who suffered the flood

Immersive disaster! This is the only word that could describe the huge flood in Varna, Veliko Turnovo, Dobrich and other regions in Bulgaria. At least 13 people died (3 children among them) tens of houses were destroyed, big areas were flooded and thousands of people lost their property. This happened only for several hours in Thursday and Friday.

Wise people say that disaster brings people together. I also thought so in the first days after tragedy in Veliko Turnovo, Dobrich and Asparuhovo (Varna) (as well as in the many other places where nature brought huge damages). After this the social networks and some media have been also flooded, but not by the flood of nature; instead, they were drowned by mud that is not less killing – the one that spreads hatred and makes people raise against each other. And most probably all those people spreading the hatred have not even been to place of the tragedy. They would have not written what they did if they had seen with their own eyes the mother asking “Do you know what it is to lose your child?”

Our volunteers have seen this with their own eyes and experienced it with their hearts, because it can hurt only if you have a heart. If you have no heart, you would not leave your convenient place of living: your student exams, work, family, the rest during the weekend to go to help - people who do not even know. And contrary to everything that has been written recently, Roma volunteers have been there. And they still are. On Sunday, the most motivated groups from Novi Pazar and Shumen were already at “Asparuhovo". Amalipe Volunteers from the Community Development Center, Novi Pazar, and Youth Club "Youth is Tolerance" - Shumen grabbed their enthusiasm, willingness to help and most of all - their humanity, to help those who have suffered most in Asparuhovo neighborhood, the people living on "Rose Valley" street. The volunteers did not divide the people in need into Roma and Bulgarians; they helped everyone: because when disaster comes it leaves behind only HUMANS! As Humanity is just humanity and has no color and ethnicity!

Here is what Silvia Stancheva, the youth coordinator of “Youth is Tolerance” Club in Shumen wrote:

Tragedy! Horror! Pain! Death! These words are too weak to describe the situation we came across today! I can not find stronger words to describe you the feelings provoked in us by the scenes in Asparuhovo neigbourhood! We could not do much!, but all the people were very grateful! They called us friends! Humans! We came back home satisfied that we could help even with a while, that we could share their suffering, that we were just HUMAN BEINGS!

A lot of other volunteers from Amalipe clubs and community centers from all over the country will go the following days also to Dobrich and Kilifarevo.
